The good news was that Hicks managed to finagle credentials but the bad news was he only managed to get one. It made sense to me that I would be the one to take the risk but Dylan thought that was a shit plan.

“There's no way she's going in by herself and you're an asshole if you let her,” she said.

I got that Dylan was being protective but I didn’t need her picking a fight with Hicks over something stupid. “He's not the boss of me and neither are you. Franklin was my buyer so I'll be the one to take the risk. You know that if it was your buyer in question there's nothing that would stop you from taking this job."

Dylan refused to see my point. “That’s totally different. I can handle myself.”

I narrowed my stare, bristling at her statement. “So can I.”

“No offense but Franklin nearly dragged you out a side door the other night. What happens if he shows up while you’re playing maid? Are you going to let him drag you into his bedroom or are you going to fucking take him down?”

“I’ll take care of it,” I answered, hardening my voice. I didn’t need Dylan reminding me how I fucked up. I was very aware and it wouldn’t happen again. I returned to Hicks, getting to business. “Tell me how this works.”

Hicks nodded, moving on, not the least bit ruffled by Dylan’s outburst. “All right, you’re going in as a new hire with this temp agency that provides employees for the cleaning service Dubois uses. You'll be training with another person. So, you'll have to go by the temp agency and sign some paperwork. I've got a fake ID for you but try not to answer too many questions. Don't volunteer anything that you don't have to.”

I accepted the slick new license with a shake of my head, peeping at the totally fake persona created for me. “This isn't my first rodeo,” I murmured, but wrinkled my nose at the details. I definitely didn’t look like an ‘Erin,’ which was the name stamped on the ID. Oh well. Beggars couldn’t be choosers, so here we go. “What are they expecting?”

“It's real simple. You're the new girl learning the ropes. When you're in there, that's when you keep your eyes peeled and look for anything that we talked about. Pictures, documentation anything in the hard file. Don't worry about the computer because it's not likely he's dumb enough to keep anything incriminating on a digital file.”

Dylan piped in, “What’s she supposed to do if Franklin shows up? Just smile and say, ‘Hey, what up, fucker?’”

Hicks regarded Dylan with irritation but answered, “According to my source, he shouldn't be there at all. He prefers to be away from the cleaning crew when they are there.”

“Not surprising. I can’t imagine that prick deigning to mingle with the help. It’s beneath him,” I said but that worked for me. I wasn't ready to face him again after what happened at the fundraiser.
